What is Geriatric Fitness?

As we grow older, the process is usually accompanied by numerous changes in our body. One of the changes is our body’s physical fitness due to the detetoriation in muscle strength. However, it does not mean we should just ignore it.

The best way for us to prevent any health problems and stay independent is aerobic activity and muscle strengthening.
Experts recommend that older adults should engage in moderate exercise and strength training each week to maintain a healthy heart and muscle strength. Regular exercises has shown to decrease mortality and age-related morbidities in older adults.

At Relive, we provide exercise programs tailored for each individual’s needs, focusing on strength training and functional related exercises.

What are the benefits of strength training?

  1. Minimise Risk of Bone Fractures
Bone fractures are common among older adults due to loss of bone density and osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises and strength training has been proven to increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures.
  2. Increase Muscle Mass / Strength
Most older adults experience loss of muscle mass and strength by the age of 70 and it is mainly due to the lack of usage and activity. This loss can be reversed by simple exercises and strength training.
  3. Improve Functional Movement
Training through functional exercises can help improve overall function. This helps in improving mobility, reducing the need for assistive devices and the risk of fall.
  4. Improve Cardiovascular Health
Regular aerobic exercises with the combination of a proper diet are proven to be effective in inducing weight loss, lower cholesterol level and keeping the heart pumping with optimal efficiency. These are important in ensuring a healthy heart!
  5. Improve Overall Quality of Life
Mental health is as important as one’s physical health. Exercise has shown to improve quality of life and has a positive effect on their mental health.
