Running as a hobby is a pursuit enjoyed by people from all walks of life. For many, this activity is not only a source of personal enjoyment but also a means to enhance their overall health and well-being.

These are the muscles located at the front of your hips that allow you to lift your knees and bring your legs forward during each stride. They work in harmony with your other leg muscles and core to create the fluid motion that keeps you moving smoothly along the road and trail. When you take a step while running, your hip flexors contract to lift your leg off the ground and bring it forward.

Experiencing hip pain while running can be attributed to a couple of primary factors, each requiring careful consideration. The foremost cause involves the tightness of your hip flexors, which can stem from repetitive use or underlying postural issues.

Such tightness can escalate the risk of muscle strain, particularly during extended runs. Additionally, the weakness of your gluteal muscles can contribute to this tightness, creating a cycle of discomfort.

Tightness does not equate to strength.

Its important to note that tight hip flexors don’t necessarily equate to strength; the muscles can both be tight and weak simultaneously. Weak hip muscles are susceptible to strain due to overuse during running, which might result in exacerbated pain rather than relief through traditional stretching. Therefore, stretching your hip is not recommended if your hip muscles are weak.

Sensation of pain.

Hip flexor pain presents itself across a spectrum, ranging from a sensation of tightness and mild ache at the front of the hip joint to more intense pain in the groin extending towards the lower abdomen. Some individuals might even experience pain radiating down the front thigh or a burning sensation. Notably, hip flexor pain can coincide with lower back discomfort.

Although hip stretching is often recommended when you search online, it typically provides only temporary relief. For a lasting solution, a comprehensive approach is required, encompassing an assessment of your overall posture, muscle strength, flexibility, and running biomechanics.
